The Vimy memorial at Vimy Ridge

Vimy Ridge

The Canadians and World War 1 involvement cannot be underestimated. Over The Top Tours - Ypres was the first battlefield touring company to tour the Vimy Ridge in one day from Ypres. We specialise in personal tours.

April 9th 1917 is forever in the memory of all Canadians. For the first time the 4 Canadian Divisions fought successfully side by side at the Vimy Ridge and dislodged the Germans from the 12 kilometre high ground that dominated the Arras landscape. It is said that Canada came of age following the battle and the battle marked the consolidation of the nation. Sadly, the Canadian involvement was the only successful part of a wider campaign, but nevertheless, it was a carefully planned and magnificent performance.

Battlefield Tour Information

This guided battlefield tour can be tailored to suit the individual interest of, in particular, Canadian visitors. The tour covers the heroic actions of the Canadians in April 1917, a guided tour of the Grange Tunnel, some 80 feet under the Ridge . We walk the preserved trenches where German and Canadian soldiers were only yards apart and view the refurbished magnificent Vimy Memorial.

The tour also offers a wider perspective of the area visiting the Cabaret Rouge cemetery, the French National Cemetery at Notre Dame de Lorette, the adjacent impressive trenches and battlefield site, finishing with the German cemetery at Neuville St Vast.
